Notes on two more Season 4 Episodes
4-9 Ted Koppel's Big Night Out
Fun Lorelai-Rory banter at Luke's.
Also, Luke has hired "help". And is a bit stubborn about
overlooking the not-helpful nature of the "help". One gets the
impression that subconsciously Luke may be feeling guilty about
Jess--that somehow he feels he should have "tried harder".
Also the Gilmore's all go to the Harvard-Yale game. Richard and
Emily enjoy various pregame rituals. Lorelai is less enthusiastic
but does like the tailgate party. "Naked Guy" (aka Marty) shows up
and Rory introduces him to Lorelai, Richard, and Emily. And
there's some genuine Lorelai-Emily bonding (including Lorelai
willingly comparing Rory to Richard, and meaning it
affectionately), at least before Pennilyn Lott shows up.
Which leads to the big revelation of the episode--Richard and
Pennilyn have had annual lunches since Richard got married. This
leads to an argument between Richard and Emily, then Emily and
Lorelai. Which leads to Lorelai accepting a date with Jason.
Which starts awkwardly but ends reasonably well.
(Longer term, the Pennilyn Lott revelation is another part of the
slowly developing estrangement between Emily and Richard.)
And we close on Rory spotting Paris and Asher Fleming kissing.
4-12 A Family Matter
The Lorelai-Jason relationship continues to develop. Interesting
that Lorelai "clams up" about Jason when Luke is nearby.
Lane is still staying with Rory. Paris uses Lane as one of her
excuses to avoid Jamie.
(Incidentally, "chasing the dragon" is apparently slang for
inhaling the smoke of heated heroin, morphine, or opium. At least
according to Wikipedia. Of course Lane is not, and never would be,
actually "chasing the dragon".)
Lorelai still hasn't told her parents about her and Jason. She
decides to tell Emily at Friday night dinner, but loses her nerve
when Emily makes a joke about it. Probably should have still gone
ahead and told Emily, there's never going to be a perfect time.
Paris breaks up with Jamie in this episode. And is talking about
possibly going away with Asher over the summer.
Several other things which get developed further in future
episodes. First appearance of Luke's sister Liz. She's in town
for her High School (20 year) reunion. We learn that she has a new
boyfriend, although we don't meet him until next episode. Also the
reappearance of Jess, who returns to retrieve his car. And Rory
notices multiple signs that Lorelai is economizing and asks about
money problems. Lorelai says there aren't any, but...
(And Lorelai was right in "In the Clamor and the Clangor". Luke
has NOT moved in with Nicole. Even if he believes he has.)
