4-13 Nag Hammadi is Where They Found the Gnostic Gospels
Note that the title is the answer to a question several of the
characters ask during the episode.
First appearance of T.J. (Liz's boyfriend). Luke takes an
(understandable) immediate dislike to him and tries to badger Jess
into helping him convince Liz to break up with T.J. Jess finally
snaps at Luke, telling him that Luke has to "fix everyone" and
should "leave everyone alone".
Usually don't like Jess's rants, but I'll give him a pass on this
one. Luke did keep on pressuring Jess to "help" long after Jess
had already refused. And Jess was right about the specific
situation--Liz wasn't going to listen to them. And shouldn't
listen to them in this specific case. Despite his faults T.J.
turns out to actually be a good match for Liz. (Luke later starts
to accept T.J. after watching him and Liz together.)
Jess is, of course, wrong about Luke in general. Mostly Luke is
helping people who want and are grateful for his help.
As Lorelai points out during Luke's slightly drunken rambling after
he cuts his hand trying to fix her broken window. And Lorelai
immediately goes out to confront Jess over what he said to Luke.
She does tend to be protective of Luke.
Other notes:
Jess causes a traffic jam in Star's Hollow when he pushes his car
to Gypsy's. Never had the impression that there was enough traffic
in Star's Hollow to have a traffic jam.
Emily tells Lorelai and Jason to "pretend" to be together at a
charity dinner. They do a good job of pretending... :-)
Jess keeps bolting whenever Rory is nearby. And finally tells her
that he loves her. Right before he drives out of town. Not
exactly the ideal way to do that...
Liz gives some earrings for Luke and suggests he gives them to
"your wife, or Lorelai". Interesting that Luke gives the earrings
to Lorelai.
Quotable quote from Lorelai about Luke. "He's definitely one of
the good ones. Maybe THE good one."
4-15 Scenes from a Mall
Near the beginning of this episode, Luke gives Lorelai a $30,000
check to help with the Inn.
When this episode first aired someone commented that Luke wouldn't
loan Lorelai $30,000 if he wasn't confident she could repay it. My
thought is that (assuming he had it to give) Luke would probably be
willing to loan Lorelai $30,000 even if he didn't think she could
repay, but he knows she'd never ask for that big of a loan if she
wasn't sure she could repay it.
Of course, Luke's insistence that Nicole has "no role" isn't
exactly a positive sign for the state of his marriage...
Much of the episode takes place at a nearby mall. Lorelai and Rory
decide to go window-shopping after Lorelai complains that they have
an "email relationship". While there, they run into Emily who
takes them on a shopping binge, triggered by suppressed anger at
Richard. There's also some genuine bonding between Emily and
Lorelai at the food court.
That evening Luke runs into Dean at the video arcade. There are
hints that all is not well with Dean's marriage. And Luke notices
Dean staring at Rory. Uh-oh...
(Not that Luke's marriage is in any better shape.)
It is neat that Luke automatically assume that there's a good
explanation for Lorelai and Rory showing up laden with packages
shortly after he gave Lorelai a large check. If there was less
trust between them he might have started worrying.
(The explanation, of course, was that Emily bought all the
packages.)
Lorelai and Rory still have trouble scheduling time together. And
Lorelai reassures Rory about Emily and Richard.
And we close on Emily and Richard very much not communicating.
