Some comments on two more Season 4 episodes...
Heading into the home stretch of the season...
4-19 Afterboom
Things fall apart...
Luke finalizes his divorce (although the marriage basically ended
two episodes earlier). And events set in motion in 4-16 blow up
the Emily-Richard and Lorelai-Jason relationships.
First, Jason learns that Richard has made a deal with Floyd and
basically emptied out the company (no, I don't think this is "out
of character" for Richard). Lorelai goes to confront Richard about
the betrayal. Emily overhears and confronts Richard herself.
(It may be that Emily's main problem with Richard's deal is that it
risks driving Lorelai further away.)
Rory tries to patch things up between Lorelai and Richard, and
talks Lorelai into attending the next Friday night dinner (which
Lorelai had been planning to skip). At which dinner strange
behavior by Emily and Richard cause Lorelai and Rory to (correctly)
suspect that Emily has moved out.
(Specific circumstances are not shown, although the timing suggests
that Emily's leaving was triggered by her disapproval of Richard's
betrayal of Jason. Probably more in a "last straw" way than in it
being any sort of primary cause.)
Later Jason tells Lorelai that he's suing Richard. Lorelai breaks
up with Jason, telling him that she "can't be with someone who's
suing my family".
(Note that continuing to see Jason would put Lorelai AND RORY in
the middle of the crossfire. Even if we don't accept Lorelai's
statement completely at face value, she still isn't going to be
willing to put Rory in the crossfire.)
Some other events. Lane's band has a successful gig, although it
leaves Lane feeling lonely. The Inn is getting closer to opening--
Michel is giving travel agents a tour. And Rory worries that her
"A" on a paper was due to a certain secret rather than earned by
the quality of her work (Asher states strongly, and I think
sincerely, that the "A" was entirely earned).
4-20 Luke Can See Her Face
Luke comes to a realization...
Luke buys a self-help book and tape. Which actually ends up
helping him. After listening to the tape, he realizes that he's in
love with Lorelai. (Took him long enough to figure it out.)
(Before this, there's a nice bit with Lorelai giving Luke a tour of
the Inn. And pretending Luke is her boyfriend to avoid a setup.)
Also, Liz and T.J. announce that they're getting married in a week.
And Luke goes to Jess's apartment to tell him to attend. Jess
isn't exactly enthusiastic and ends up getting into a fight with
T.J. at T.J. bachelor party. Afterwards, Jess admits that the
reason for his reluctance is that he's still in love with Rory
(who, of course, is going to be at the wedding).
More developments in the Asher-Paris relationship. Asher has asked
Paris to go to Oxford with him over the summer. Later Paris rushes
Asher to the hospital, and considers breaking up with him, before
deciding not to.
And Lorelai starts to get obsessive as the opening date for the Inn
gets closer. Until Lorelai, Sookie, Michel, and Jackson destress
by "sleeping with the zucchini".
Finally, Luke takes the first steps in acting on his realization
when he asks Lorelai to go the wedding with him.
Then he gives the self-help tapes to Jess.
