And now we begin Season 5...
5-1 Say Goodbye to Daisy Miller
We start by seeing the Lorelai/Rory argument at the end of last
season from Dean's point of view. Later Dean goes home and starts
an argument with Lindsay after he realizes she answered his cell
phone.
(Dean is really being a jerk here, although mostly out of fear. He
seems to have correctly suspected that the call Lindsay answered
was from Rory. Dean claims that the call might have been from Tom
or Taylor and then argues that they might have thought they had a
wrong number upon hearing Lindsay's voice. Luckily for Dean,
Lindsay REALLY is not in a mood for an argument then or she'd have
realized that Tom and Taylor would both have recognized her voice.)
Rory decides she and Dean need to talk and sets up a meeting.
Where hormones take over and not much talking gets done. Rory then
talks to Lane, who suggests she talk to Lorelai. This suggestion
is not met with enthusiasm by Rory. At any rate Rory and Lorelai
have already argued and "not talked" at length about the subject.
Rory walks back to the Inn after learning that Emily has showed up
for lunch. On the way she overhears Lindsay desperately asking a
butcher for advice on roasting beef.
(Rory seems to realize at this point that, regardless of what Dean
said, Lindsay hasn't yet realized that the marriage is over.)
At the luncheon, Emily "announces" her separation from Richard and
that Richard is moving to the poolhouse (Lorelai doesn't think
moving to the poolhouse is much of a separation, she does have a
good point there). Then Emily invites Rory to go with her to
Europe, and Lorelai says it sounds like a good idea. Rory accepts
but later suggests that she's being "shipped out". Lorelai points
out that Rory didn't have to accept.
(This Rory/Lorelai dispute feels a lot like a less serious version
of the split that takes place in Season 6. Still, Rory's trip with
Emily is probably a good idea since it gives Rory a bit of a
cooling-off period and some needed temporary distance from the
situation with Dean. Note that just before Rory leaves for the
trip she receives a phone call, probably from Dean, which she
doesn't answer.)
In other developments, Luke and Lorelai talk thing over a little
and decide that they both like what's happening between them. Any
further developments are postponed, however, because Luke is called
away due to somewhat of a family emergency. Specifically, Liz and
T.J. needing someone to watch over their booth temporarily. They
do agree that they'll talk more when Luke returns.
(Note that early in the episode Kirk rambles on about his "night
terror", in the process revealing to Sookie, much to Sookie's joy,
that Luke and Lorelai kissed. It is not clear whether Kirk
actually saw this or simply made an assumption.)
5-3 Written in the Stars
We have our first view of the new Friday night "routine"--splitting
the evening between Richard in the poolhouse and Emily in the main
house.
Later, Luke and Lorelai go on their first official date. It starts
out awkward, but otherwise goes well. Luke takes Lorelai to his
favorite restaurant, run by old friends of his father. He also
recalls the story of meeting Lorelai eight years ago--Lorelai came
into the coffee shop, bugged him for coffee, then gave him a
horoscope and told him to hang on to it. Luke tells her he's "all
in". The next morning Lorelai inadvertently reveals the
relationship to the town when she goes downstairs for coffee in
(just) Luke's shirt, not realizing the diner is already open.
(Tend to agree with Rob that this probably isn't technically the
first time that Luke and Lor actually met, just the first time
Lorelai specifically called herself to Luke's attention.)
Lorelai is a little upset that there doesn't seem to be ANY gossip
about her and Luke. Until they go to the town meeting and learn
that Taylor has made their relationship one of the topics.
Discussion goes on for a while until Luke loses patience and tells
everyone that it's "our relationship", and it isn't any business of
the rest of the town.
Meanwhile, Rory starts back at Yale. She reunites with Marty, then
calls Paris and learns that Asher died recently. Later, Paris
returns and decides to have a wake for Asher. Which is well
attended, although few of the attendees realize that it IS a wake.
Rory also has her first (and second) meeting with Logan Huntzberger
(and his friends Colin and Finn) in this episode. At this point
she mostly finds Logan irritating (and perhaps a bit intriguing?).
He seems to find her interesting, although he may not yet be
interested in her.
And clearly interested Marty asks Rory if she has a boyfriend.
Drawing the response "I don't know."
And we close on Rory showing up at Dean's doorstep and then going
inside.
(Note that in the previous episode, Dean and Lindsay's marriage
finally completely collapsed after Lindsay found a letter that Rory
wrote to Dean. One wonders whether Dean actually WANTED Lindsay to
find the letter. At any rate he didn't do a very good job of
hiding it.)
