That's my interpretation also.

As Sharpe Fan notes below, the "announcement" does not START this 
storyline.  Richard and Emily had been drifting apart for 
practically all of Season 4, and there were hints even before then 
that their marriage wasn't quite as solid as it might appear.

And, of course, Richard and Emily had already split several weeks 
before the "announcement".  In one sense the "announcement" is only 
a statement of something that had already happened.

Of course (as Lorelai recognized) it's also a half-measure.  
Richard moves into the pool house rather than getting an entirely 
new place at least partly because Richard and Emily don't WANT a 
more definitive split.

(Ignoring the Chris/Lorelai comment for now.  Will address the 
subject when the time comes.)

My thought is that while the problems weren't entirely solved, the 
separation made them decide that the problems were less im****tant 
than the strengths of their marriage.  Plus they really missed each 
other, even if they avoided saying so.
