And we reach the midway point of Season 5...
5-9 Emily Says Hello
Rory decides that she and Lorelai should get Richard and Emily back
together. Rory suggests they split up on Friday and each convince
one of the elder Gilmores. Lorelai isn't enthusiastic but goes
along with the plan. Rory talks to Richard. It looks like Richard
figures out what she's doing, but he doesn't say anything. Lorelai
talks to Emily, but doesn't get that far before Emily announces
that it's time for her to start dating.
(On the whole, it might have been a better idea for Rory to talk to
both Richard and Emily, even though she'd only have had half the
time with each. Not that would REALLY have mattered, even though
Rory's right about the elder Gilmores missing each other it isn't
likely that she'll be able to fix the situation.)
And speaking of Rory trying to fix things. A few episodes ago,
Rory told Christopher to stay away from Lorelai, because she was
afraid Christopher would ruin things for Lorelai and Luke (Rory has
a point, but she's still way out of line.)
Of course what happens is that Lorelai wonders why Christopher
hasn't said anything after his panicky phone call weeks ago. So
SHE calls Christopher to ask about him and Gigi (Chris's daughter).
And then invites Chris to stop by the Inn for lunch and bring Gigi.
Lorelai also invites Rory over for lunch, which leads to Rory
getting upset at Christopher. And later confessing to Lorelai that
she was upset because she had asked Christopher not to contact
Lorelai.
Lorelai nervously tells Luke about the lunch with Christopher (she
had earlier told Rory that she had already told Luke). Luke,
trying to sort out how he feels, asks TJ a hypothetical question,
which leads to a huge overreaction by TJ. And (at least for now)
Luke deciding that he's not going to be like TJ.
(There's a similariy between the way that Lorelai interacts with
Christopher when she's with Luke, and the way she later interacts
with Luke when she's with Christopher. In both cases she ACTS like
she has something to hide. Acts like just maintaining social
contact is something she needs to be furtive about.)
In other developments, Jackson is still overwhelmed by his
selectman duties. And Marty ALMOST manages to ask Rory out on a
date (Rory and Dean finally broke up at the end of the previous
episode).
And we close on Emily, after what seems to be a pleasant date,
looking around at the empty house and crying.
5-12 Women of Questionable Morals
First snow of the winter in Star's Hollow. Lorelai loves the snow
at first. Until it causes all sorts of problems, including causing
the Inn to run short of coffee.
Also, Christopher visits Yale to make peace with Rory, but Rory
brushes him off.
Meanwhile, Emily and Richard find a lost dog. And start bonding
over it.
Emily joins Richard, Lorelai, and Rory in the poolhouse for drinks
(she's supposedly watching over the dog). Emily tells Rory and
Lorelai about the death of Christopher's father. And both Rory and
Lorelai visit Christopher to console him.
The next morning Lorelai doesn't tell Luke about visiting
Christopher (it's possible she might have told him if Rory hadn't
interrupted). This causes problems a few episodes later.
After the owner of the dog is found, Richard and Emily complain
that the lack of a tag meant a great deal of inconvenience and
eventually go back to their separate routines.
(One gets the impression that they actually liked the
"inconvenience". There's a point where they almost seem on the
edge of getting back together, if either of them could come up with
the right words. Unfortunately actual communication has never been
either Richard or Emily's strong point. They've been slowly
drifting back together all season, but they haven't quite taken the
last steps.)
Finally, Luke decides to reconcile Lorelai to snow, and builds
Lorelai an ice rink. And we close on her skating happily around
the rink.
