Relationships renewed, relationships begin, relationships fall
apart.
And the show reaches a milestone. Wedding Bell Blues is the 100th
episode.
5-13 Wedding Bell Blues
The episode centers around the renewal of Richard and Emily's
wedding vows (they got back together near the end of the previous
episode.)
Lots of fun little scenes: Lor as "Morton Salt Girl," the
improvised bachelorette party, Lor "finding out" which necklace
goes best with Emily's dress, Rory and Christopher's conversation
(where she learns about Lorelai and Christopher's first kiss),
Richard as "Bill," etc.
Meanwhile, Rory and Logan take more steps toward a relationship.
Rory talks to Logan and directly asks him if he likes her. Logan
tells her he hasn't asked her out because he isn't "boyfriend
material." Rory tells him that she's fine with "stringless fun"
and Rory and Logan leave the dance floor for a private room.
(Whatever Logan's other faults, he is generally playing fair with
Rory here.)
And then several circumstances come together to set off a time
bomb...
Christopher had come to the wedding (at Emily's urging) hoping to
win Lorelai back. And Lorelai, seeing Chris, finally told Luke
about going to see him after Chris' dad died. (Which might not
have been a big deal if she had told him when it happened, but
right then...). And then Lorelai, Chris, and Luke walk in on a
partially dressed Rory and Logan. Which prompts Chris and Luke to
yell at Logan and then argue with each other. And Chris to reveal
not only that he wants Lorelai back, but that Emily put him up to
it.
(Christopher, Christopher, Christopher. Whatever possessed you to
think that "Emily can see it" is going to be a helpful argument
with Lorelai?)
Luke storms off, Lorelai tries to go after him but is intercepted
by Cousin Marilyn. And we close on the wedding party posing for a
picture, and Lorelai telling Emily "We're through."
5-14 Say Something
We start with a replay of the last moments of the previous episode.
Then Lorelai goes to find Luke. She finally finds him at a movie
theater where Luke tells her he needs time to think.
The next day, Lorelai sees Luke at the grocery store (Taylor is
handing out pink and blue ribbons about the breakup) and presses
him for an answer. Luke tells her "it's too much" and they break
up.
Meanwhile, Rory calls Logan to "hang out," gets invited over, and
is upset to find out it's a poker night. While there she gets a
call from Sookie, Logan offers Rory the use of his car and driver
and Rory rushes home to comfort Lorelai.
Lorelai says that Rory should go back to Yale, but Rory replies
that she's there "for the duration". Rory runs various errands
(with assistance from Lane). Lorelai finally convinces Rory that
she's feeling better--and stops pretending as soon as Rory leaves.
(Neat little bit where Rory says "a friend" loaned her the car and
driver and Lorelai tells her to thank Logan for her.)
Then Lorelai leaves a lengthy message on Luke's machine, then
rushes over to retrieve it, and returns to find that Luke had
rushed over. She apologizes and tells him "I'll be fine" and Luke
leaves.
(Interesting little dynamic here. First Lorelai presses when Luke
isn't ready to talk. Then, at the very end, she doesn't talk--
can't talk, when Luke might just have been willing to listen. One
gets the impression that if either of them had said the right
things at that point that the breakup might have ended right there.
Of course, communication about emotional matters isn't exactly a
strong point for either Luke or Lorelai.)
