Some notes on Episodes 5-17, 5-19

by Michael Ikeda <mmikeda@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > May 4, 2008 at 06:34 PM

5-17 Pulp Friction

Lorelai returns to the diner after reconciling with Luke. She puts
her cellphone on Luke's speed dial. Kirk is collecting the pink
and blue ribbons. Although he has some difficulty collecting
Lulu's ribbon...

At Friday night dinner, Rory is friendlier toward Emily than she
was the previous dinner (in the previous episode, Rory basically
treated Richard normally while being pointedly cool toward Emily).
Richard and Emily are surprised that Lorelai didn't show up and
conclude that Luke must not have talked to Lorelai.

(In the last episode, after Rory's coolness and Lorelai's complete
freeze-out, Richard suggested that Emily cut her losses by telling
Luke to talk to Lorelai. It does not seem to have occured to
either Richard or Emily that Lorelai might still be angry over
Emily's original scheme. However, Luke and Lorelai getting back
together does seem to have helped Emily with Rory, although Rory
may still have been a bit more reserved than usual toward Emily.)

Meanwhile, Rory and Logan have started dating but not exclusively.
While shopping, Rory and Lorelai spot Logan with another girl.
Rory claims it's fine, that they're keeping things "casual". She
doesn't appear to be as "fine" with it as she claims, although
later when Logan asks her she says she's still OK with "no
strings".

Then Robert asks Rory to attend Finn's birthday party with him and
she agrees. Logan is there with a date of his own but (somewhat to
his surprise) finds that seeing Rory with Robert bothers him and
asks Rory to leave the party with him. Rory refuses (good for
her).

(Logan and Rory continuing to edge toward being
boyfriend/girlfriend. Lorelai's right when she remarks elsewhere in
this episode that Rory isn't the "casual" type, even though Rory is
trying to convince herself that she can be. Meanwhile Logan,
almost against his conscious intentions, is finding that he's
feeling less "casual" and more "relationship" when it comes to
Rory.)

Luke and Lorelai go on their first date since getting back
together. Like their FIRST first date, it's a bit uncomfortable at
the very start. They return to find a naked Kirk asleep in Luke's
boat. Kirk had taken Luke's suggestion and decided to move out of
his mother's place. Unfortunately he didn't get his own place
before moving out.

(Although one would think that someone able to raise (as we learn
later) $250,000 in cash could find someplace to rent without that
much problem. On the other hand, Kirk is Kirk.)

Later Emily enters the diner and starts to berate Luke. Luke
speed-dials Lorelai (good thing she programmed his cell) and
Lorelai rushes to the diner. She tells Emily that if she wants her
input she'll ask for it.

(Lorelai's speech also seems to have helped her decide, at least
temporarily, not to say anything to Rory about Rory's relationship
with Logan. Of course, Lorelai knows Rory a lot better than Emily
knows Lorelai, so any advice Lorelai gives to Rory would have a LOT
better chance of being right. Although it might not be much more
welcome than Emily's advice to Lorelai.)

5-19 But I'm a Gilmore

Rory wakes up in the Gilmore bathroom the morning after getting
drunk on Founder's Day Punch. After she returns to Yale, she tells
Logan that she doesn't like casual dating. Logan tells her he can
be a boyfriend.

Later, Logan's sister Honor asks Logan to attend the family dinner
where she is planning to announce her engagement. Honor is amazed
that Logan would call anyone his "girlfriend" and invites Rory to
the dinner. The atmosphere at the dinner is icy, at first Honor
thinks it's because of her engagement, but it soon becomes clear
that it's because Logan's mother and grandfather disapprove of
Rory. They tell Logan that "it'll never work" and that Rory isn't
"the right kind of person" for Logan. Logan walks out with Rory
just as Mitchum (Logan's dad) arrives.

(There are times when one gets irritated at Logan. Then there are
times when one looks at most of the rest of his family and he looks
very good by comparison. With the possible exception of Honor,
Logan seems to be the best of the bunch.)

After walking Rory to her dorm, Logan goes for a walk and Rory
tells Lorelai about the dinner. Lorelai wonders about Logan, but
just then Logan shows up at the door and Rory tells Lorelai that
"everything's fine".

In other developments, Sookie is put on bed rest for the remainder
of her pregnancy. Which leaves the Inn without a head chef.
Lorelai recruits Luke to fill in, which he does quite well. He
gets irritated by Sookie's constant interference and rants about
how he would just walk out if he wasn't in a relationship (of
course he really wouldn't have). Lorelai talks to Sookie and they
decide that one of the assistant chefs will fill in until she
returns.

Also, Paris learns that the reason Doyle didn't call her is that he
was sick. Paris brings in her former nanny to look after him.
Later, Paris tells Rory that she's talked to Doyle and that they're
now in a "committed relationship".

And in the final scene, Mitchum walks into the newsroom and offers
Rory an internship at a paper he just bought.
