And we now conclude Season 5...
5-21 Blame Booze and Melville
Plotlines, plotlines, and more plotlines...
Rory and Lorelai plan Sookie's baby shower. Which gets cancelled
due to Sookie going into labor. Sookie has a baby girl, who gets
practically all of the names that Sookie and Jackson had been
considering. (A likely "Buffy" reference--Jackson's suggested
boy's names were Rupert and Ethan.) Sookie also tells Jackson to
get a vasectomy. Which, we learn next season, he didn't actually
do.
Meanwhile Lorelai thinks she might be pregnant. Mostly based on
her developing a craving for apples (the last time she had that
craving was when she was pregnant with Rory) following what was
apparently unprotected *** with Luke. It is possible that being in
the maternity ward may also have had something to do with these
thoughts. Lorelai doesn't mention possible pregnancy (which turns
out to be false alarm) to Luke, partly because of concerns over
Luke's reaction.
(Considering Luke was trying to buy the Twickham house as a future
home for him, Lorelai, and their kids it is possible that Luke's
reaction would be better than Lorelai and Rory think. Although, in
this case, there isn't any particular reason to tell Luke yet. "I
have a craving for apples" isn't exactly solid evidence.)
This is also the episode where we learn that Kirk has sizable
savings--roughly $250,000 in readily available funds. Luke can't
believe that Kirk has $250,000 yet complained about a 10 cent price
hike. Kirk responds that that's part of the reason that he HAS all
that money.
And the magazine article on Lorelai's Inn comes out, with some very
unflattering references to Emily. And Emily reads it for the first
(and, at Lorelai's request, the last) time. Lorelai then helps
calm down Emily's ballet dancer who had a bad reaction to a ****tion
of the article.
And then there's the big event of this episode. As Rory nears the
end of her intern****p she gets a very negative review from Mitchum
Huntzberger. Mitchum basically tells her that she won't be a good
re****ter. Rory takes this too much to heart. She tells Logan she
wants to go out to sea and talks him into stealing a boat with her.
And we close on Lorelai getting a call from Rory at the police
station...
(When this episode originally aired, I seem to recall someone
wondering whether Mitchum had offered the intern****p for the sole
purpose of giving Rory a bad review at the end. I don't think he
did, mainly because I don't see Mitchum thinking Rory is im****tant
enough to do that. Not that he's giving her anything that remotely
resembles a fair assessment--if you want to judge someone's ability
to be a real re****ter then give them a job that at least partly
involves being a re****ter.
As far as the actual boat-stealing is concerned, this is one place
where Logan REALLY fails Rory. I strongly suspect that it wouldn't
even be possible for Rory to steal a boat without Logan's help.
And I have a hard time believing that Logan couldn't figure out
some way of getting a boat that wouldn't get them arrested. Which
basically makes them both about equally responsible for what
happened. I suspect that the problem is that Logan simply doesn't
think of getting arrested as being anything im****tant.)
5-22 A House is not a Home
Lorelai arrives to pick up Rory from the police station. She is
not amused by Colin and Finn treating the entire matter as a big
joke. Rory tells Lorelai about Mitchum's "assessment" and Lorelai
tries to reassure her.
Rory is still in full "bolt" mode and blanks on her last final.
Later she tells Lorelai that she's not going back to Yale. She
says that "she doesn't want to wander around a school where
everyone else is focused and working towards something and I'm just
floating." (Among other things, Rory seems to be forgetting the
entire Life and Death Brigade crowd.) Lorelai goes to Emily and
Richard for help. Lorelai tells them about Rory quitting Yale,
Rory's dinner with the Huntzberger clan, Mitchum's "assessment",
and the stolen yacht. They agree to talk to Rory at Friday night
dinner. Unfortunately Rory talks to Richard first, and convinces
them that it's a good idea for her to move into the poolhouse.
Lorelai arrives, learns of Richard and Emily's turnabout and
leaves. Lorelai tells Luke what happened and Luke goes into a rant
about not letting it happen.
And we close on Lorelai proposing to Luke...
(Not much comment necessary about this specific plotline. Except
that Richard and Emily's turnabout is part them wanting a "do-
over" on Lorelai and part simply being a soft touch when it comes
to Rory.)
One other development in this episode is that Lane sees the band
slowly breaking up and goes to her mother to tell her about this.
Which (much to Lane's surprise) leads to her mother telling her
that "Kims do not give up" and then organizing a tour for the band.
(Interesting reaction from Mrs. Kim. In her own way, Mrs. Kim
tends to be much more sup****tive of Lane than one might think.
Mrs. Kim could easily have been just a caricature. Fortunately she
isn't written that way and isn't played that way.)
