And now we begin Season 6...
6-1 New and Improved Lorelai
We open with a reprise of Lorelai=92s proposal and then see Luke=92s quick
acceptance. Luke and Lorelai search for champagne to toast the
engagement, finally finding some Zima at Doose=92s market. Later, Luke
finally tells Lorelai about the Twickham house and rambles on about
=93kids=94. Lorelai is a bit upset that Luke bought a house for them
without telling her but also says =93kids would be nice=94.
On the Rory front, Richard and Rory have a meeting with the lawyer.
The lawyer is very confident (too confident as it turns out). Paris
stops by the poolhouse to ask if Rory wants to move in with her and
Doyle. She learns that Rory is taking =93time off=94 and is not pleased.
Later, Logan takes Rory to a party where everyone is dressed as
=93prisoners=94. Rory tells Logan that she may dethrone him as monarch of
the sloths. Logan predicts that she=92ll be back to school in a month.
(Whatever else one thinks of Logan, he knows enough about Rory to
realize that she really does belong back at Yale. Although he does
underestimate how long it=92s going to take her to realize that.)
Meanwhile, Paris goes to Lorelai to ask her to =93do something=94 about
Rory. Paris says that =93I need her at Yale=94 and =93Rory is my only
friend.=94 Lorelai doesn=92t think there=92s anything she can do yet, but
tells Paris =93you can call me=94 if she needs to talk.
(Thought I=92d mention something Stephanie Whiteside wrote about Rory
and Paris in her essay in =93Coffee at Luke=92s=94 (Jennifer Crusie,
editor). Stephanie remarks =93Their relation****p, from the awkward
beginning to the series of misunderstandings, fights, and mishaps that
followed, has all the makings of a classic romantic comedy.=94 Rob has
previously noted the romantic comedy elements in some of the Lorelai-
Rory scenes. Apparently that isn=92t the only place they can be seen.)
Rory=92s court date arrives and things don=92t go as planned. The judge
overrules the plea bargain and assigns 300 hours of community
service. This sparks an outburst from Richard at both the judge and
his lawyer.
(Ironically, with the judge she actually got, Rory might have been
better off if Lorelai had been taking care of matters. One suspects
that Richard=92s lawyer skipped over parts of Rory=92s background that
might have led the judge to view her more sympathetically.)
That night Lorelai brings Rory=92s things to Emily and Richard=92s
bedroom. She tells them the story of the scorpion and the frog and
say that they=92re getting their =93do-over=94.
And we close on Lorelai collecting herself so that Luke can have his
=93moment=94.
3-4 Always a Godmother, Never a God
Rory learns that Emily can interfere by remote control as Emily=92s maid
is told to =93help=94 Rory with her =93summer things=94 and takes most of
Rory=92s clothes away into tem****ary storage. Emily also asks Rory to
fill in for her at a DAR mixer. Rory seems to be in her element at
the mixer, although she does have a moment of panic.
Meanwhile, Jackson=92s family wants Jackson and Sookie=92s kids to be
baptized. Jackson and Sookie argue over it, then Lorelai suggests
that Jackson=92s family stay at the Inn. Later, Sookie tells Luke about
finding a wedding cake topper with Luke=92s face. Luke reminds her that
they aren=92t setting a wedding date until Lorelai and Rory make up.
Which is apparently when Sookie gets a =93bright idea=94. (Uh-oh.)
Sookie asks Lorelai to be Martha=92s godmother and =93casually=94 mentions
that she wants Rory to be Davey=92s godmother. Sookie guilt-trips
Lorelai into accepting even though Lorelai correctly suspects that
this is just a ruse to try to get Rory and her back together.
Morning of the baptism: parallel scenes with Rory and Logan, and
Lorelai and Luke. Later, Rory and Lane catch up. Rory tells Lane
that taking time off was =93absolutely the right decision=94 (although she
doesn=92t seem quite as sure as she claims) but that she hasn=92t talked
to Lorelai in weeks. Lane reassures Rory that Lorelai and her will
make up soon.
(Parallel scenes is a technique that will be repeated--showing a unity
underlying the separation.)
Things explode at the baptism, as Lorelai starts an argument with
Rory. Later, Lorelai apologizes to Sookie and Sookie confesses that
she asked Lorelai and Rory to be godmothers to try to get them back
together.
(As Sookie learns, trying to force people back together before they=92re
ready, not necessarily such a good idea. Sometimes when you set up
potentially explosive situations, they explode on you.)
(Something else that is worth pointing out. Lorelai is very much on
the edge. Most of the time she manages to keep herself under tight
enough control that she almost seems to be fine. But the control can
be brittle at times. Thus the argument at the baptism.)
And then Rory calls Logan and Logan tells her that he has been told
that he IS going to be a Huntzberger, with all of the duties that
entails.
(I suspect that part of the reason that Logan acts so irresponsibly is
that he hopes it=92ll put Mitchum off of the idea of making Logan his
successor. It=92s, in part, a kind of disguised rebellion against his
=93destiny=94. Unfortunately for Logan, Mitchum isn=92t noticing that it
is=
a rebellion.)
We close on Lorelai watching a movie alone (that she would normally
have watched with Rory) and saying =93It=92s not the same=94.
