Emily's hair and makeup radically changed between the pilot and
episode 2. A lot can be done with *just* makeup (even natural,
non-prosthetic makeup for TV) to make a person look younger, older,
harsher, to emphasize jawlines to make the person look thinner or more
filled out in the face.
Or ASP may have made a creative decision in conjunction with KB to
have her put on a few pounds to make Emily look waaaay less severe,
taking her out of the Cruella de Ville look in order to make Emily
look more sympathetic and bring in what was supposed to be there all
along: the possibility that Emily could change her attitude toward
Lorelai in tiny steps throughout the course of the series.
