Re: Highlander Character Seminar: Duncan MacLeod in Homeland

Duncan remembers his first love, Debra Campbell. She runs toward him
and embraces him. She asks if he's spoken to his father about
marrying her. Duncan says Debra has to marry his cousin, Robert.
"And that's the end of it." Debra protests that Duncan is the
chieftain's son. Surely something can be done. Duncan points out
that the marriage is intended to unite their clans. Debra doesn't see
why she and Duncan couldn't do that just as well. But the marriage to
Robert had been previously arranged. Duncan gives Debra a bracelet
saying "Think of me when you look at it," then adds that he's
leaving. Debra begs him to take her with him. Duncan says that would
dishonor her and shame their clans. She then begs him not to leave.
"I have to see you even if it's across the village." Duncan says it's
too hard looking at her when he can't have her.

After Robert strikes Debra for refusing to give back the bracelet,
Duncan intervenes. Robert says Duncan has turned Debra's heart
against him. Duncan says she can't help her heart, as he can't help
his. He also tells Robert that he has what he wants, but he won't let
Robert strike Debra. Robert says he won't let Duncan make him a
cuckold and draws his sword. Duncan refuses to fight Robert,
reminding him of their friend****p. Robert gives him a good whack and
calls Duncan a coward. Duncan still refuses to fight him. Duncan's
father, Ian, the clan chieftain, tells Duncan that the chieftain's son
can't refuse a challenge. It would dishonor his family. Duncan asks
Robert to withdraw his challenge. "I dinna want your blood," says
Duncan. "Aye, but I do," says Robert and seals his fate. They
fight. Robert wounds Duncan. Duncan says "You have your
satisfaction." But Robert lunges toward him again. Duncan runs him
through and regrets it immediately.

Back in the present, Duncan is still staring at his father's sword.
To Joe he says "That was supposed to be mine, but it never happened."
Duncan then takes out Debra's bracelet from his pocket and looks at it
while waiting to be served at the bar. Rachel catches sight of the
bracelet and asks where he got it. Duncan says he bought it in
Paris. "You think you can buy your roots," Rachel says in disgust.
"You're no better than the grave robbers." Duncan demands to know
where graves were robbed. "So you can take more souvenirs?" she
returns bitterly. Duncan leaves, unable to prove that he's innocent
of this charge.

Duncan rides off on a horse. He encounters Joe and indicates that
he'd like some privacy. Joe complains that he dragged himself up the
goat path. Duncan corrects him, saying that it's a sheep path and he
hopes those aren't Joe's best shoes. When Joe wants to discuss the
recent serial killings, Duncan says he's sure the police are handling
it. Joe wants to know why Duncan came to Scotland. Duncan
reluctantly reveals that he's looking for a grave.
