Back in the fb, Debra is trying to convince Duncan not to be consumed
with guilt over Robert's death. They could name their first born
after Robert. Duncan says he can't wed her with the blood of his
kinsman and friend on his hands. Debra says she can't live without
him and flees toward a precipice. Duncan tries to talk her out of
jumping by telling her she has a life. She says she has nothing.
Duncan then tells her he'll marry her because he can live with
Robert's ghost, but not Debra's. He reaches out his hand, and she
reaches back, but she slips and falls. The bracelet Duncan had given
her falls from her wrist to the foot of the cliff.
In the present Duncan is telling Joe this tragic tale. He says he
that he thought the pain would kill him. The church ruled it a
suicide, so Duncan couldn't bury her on consecrated ground. So he
buried her where she'd fallen and laid the bracelet in her grave. Joe
wonders why it's been so difficult for Duncan to find her grave.
Duncan responds that it's been 400 years and the landmarks are gone.
Joe wishes Duncan success in finding the grave. Duncan thanks him.
Duncan eventually finds the tree under which he buried Debra, reburies
the bracelet and places flowers on the grave. Rachel only sees him
filling the grave back in, so she misinterprets Duncan's intention.
She tells Duncan that he's far from the trail and must be lost. "Not
anymore," says Duncan and rides back to Glenfinnan village.
At the inn Joe wonders why Duncan isn't packed because he'd done what
he'd come for. Duncan now wants to take care of the serial killer
problem. He says that these are his people. Joe reminds him that he
was the chieftain's son 400 years ago. Duncan returns stubbornly that
he won't let them be murdered.
The police knock on the door of Duncan's hotel room saying that they
have a warrant to search it. Duncan says "Highland hospitality has
gone down hill." Rachel, who is accompanying the police says, "Maybe
it's the guests." The police tell Duncan and Joe to stand against the
wall. Duncan asks what he's charged with. A policeman informs him
that this is about grave robbing. Then Rachel, who aids in the
search, finds Duncan's sword and says "I was wrong. It's about
murder."
After Duncan is vindicated on the grave robbing charge, , he and Joe
play darts. Joe asks Duncan when he's getting his sword back. Duncan
says it will be a few days. Joe speaks about what he's learned of the
legend of Kanwulf and says that he thinks that the most recent killing
is connected because it's a blood eagle sacrifice. The blood eagle
had become very associated with Kanwulf in local stories. Duncan is
at first unwilling to believe that the serial killer could be Kanwulf.
Then Duncan realizes that he hadn't beheaded Kanwulf because he hadn't
known anything about being Immortal at that point.
