Duncan has just returned to Seacouver from his trip to Scotland (see
"Homeland"). At the air****t a sniper in a ski mask shoots and
tem****arily kills an Immortal. Duncan pursues the sniper. He directs
Joe to take care of the soon to be reviving Immortal. The sniper
turns out to be Charlie who refuses to give any explanation for his
actions saying that his motivation is private. When Duncan asks him
if he's in trouble, Charlie says that "it's nothing I can't handle."
Duncan tells him that he can't handle this. Charlie mistakenly
responds "I already have."
Duncan learns from Joe that Andrew Cord, the Immortal that Charlie
tried to kill, saved Joe's life in Vietnam when he stepped on a mine
and lost his legs. Joe wants Duncan to know that Cord isn't here for
Duncan. Duncan says that if Cord isn't looking for him, he isn't
looking for Cord. Joe asks about the sniper. Duncan says that he got
away. "That's good," Joe says. "Poor bastard doesn't know who he's
taken on." Duncan starts looking concerned.
Duncan is working out with a punching bag in the dojo when Charlie
comes in. Duncan asks if Charlie wants to work out. Charlie says
he's a little rusty, and says it's not easy for him to come back to
the dojo. Duncan says it's Charlie's home and always will be.
Charlie thinks the dojo has changed. "Maybe it's not the place,"
Duncan responds.
Charlie is disturbed that the authorities that no one died at the
air****t. "Maybe you just winged him," says Duncan. Charlie is
certain he killed Cord. Duncan asks once again why Charlie did it.
Charlie reveals that Cord killed Mara over an arms deal gone wrong.
Duncan says he understands what Charlie is going through, but he needs
to forget about Cord. Charlie tells Duncan that he can't. He demands
to know if Duncan saw Charlie take Cord down. "You didn't kill him,"
Duncan responds. Then he reminds Charlie that he's Charlie's friend,
but Charlie doesn't want to listen.
Duncan comes to Joe's and says he's looking for Cord. He just needs
to talk to Cord. He wants Joe to arrange a meeting. Joe says that he
doesn't know if he can do that. Duncan says that Joe is the only one
who can. Joe tells Duncan that if it weren't for having seen Cord die
and revive in Vietnam, he wouldn't be in the Watchers and he wouldn't
know Duncan. Duncan says thoughtfully that no one knows more about
him than Joe, but he didn't know anything about Joe's past until now.
Joe says Duncan never asked, and if Duncan had he might not have told
him. "When you have a secret, you get into the habit of not opening
up." Duncan says he knows all about that. Duncan reveals that the
sniper was Charlie. Joe wonders why Charlie would come after Cord.
Duncan tells Joe about Mara's death. Duncan says he wants to talk to
Cord for Charlie's sake. "It's just talk. You have my word."
