Sadly, you hit the nail on the head. The problem has been that, even if 
they put cheap crap together, there is enough of a core audience that 
will see it (regardless of how good it is) so that they never feel 
pressured enough to produce quality.

Again, going back to the Star trek comparison, it was the same thing.  
They really put out crap the last several times they went to the well, 
and Paramount never forked over the kind of production money and acquired 
the top-notch talent for any Star Trek production, until now.  This new 
Star Trek has a major push from Paramount with hot producer/director JJ 
Abrams and an amazingly larger production budget than any previous Star 
Trek movie. Highlander deserves the same consideration.
