Amen! That's the point -- it wasn't just a simple retread, it's a
whole new concept. The old Battlestar was a hokey space opera. The
new Battlestar borrows some concepts from the original, but takes them
in a whole different direction: topical, self-contained, edgy. In
most cases, remakes are watered down versions of an original. Even
worse, faithful remakes tend to seem cliche, since original concepts
tend to have been reused many times since an original show aired. I
watched the original Battlestar when it first aired in the early 80s,
and I've watched the new one. The new Battlestar Galactica is a rare
example of a TV show where the remake is a far better show than the
original ever was.
BTW: for anyone who missed "Battlestar Galactica: Razor" this weekend,
they had a pretty big homage to the original series. You'll know it
when you see it. :)
