Highlander Character Seminar: Joe Dawson in Brothers in Arms

by Shomeret <JDChronicler@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Dec 9, 2007 at 11:31 PM

Post 1

Joe and Duncan are shown walking through Seacouver air****t when a
sniper shoots Immortal Andrew Cord. Duncan tells Joe to "get him out
of there" before Cord revives as he goes in pursuit of the ski-masked
sniper.

We next see Cord seated next to Joe in Joe's vehicle. Joe is playing
a CD of himself singing. When Cord revives he says "Turn that crap
off." "No problem, Sergeant," says Joe with a smile as he presses the
off button. Cord is surprised to be addressed as Sergeant and asks if
he knows Joe. Joe starts singing "I don't know but I've been told
good marines they don't grow old." Since this is a reference to
Cord's immortality as well as to the context in which they knew each
other, Cord pretends ignorance. When Joe further specifies Vietnam
and the village where Joe's life changed so completely, Cord realizes
Joe's identity. "Boyscout, is that you?" Cord says using his nickname
for Joe. "Outstanding!" says Cord with enthusiasm.

Joe starts reminiscing saying "It's been a long time since anyone
called me Boyscout." He experiences a Vietnam flashback. When Joe
accompanies Cord into a hut of a Vietnamese woman who had been raped
by another member of Cord's platoon, Joe wants to re****t the
incident. Cord kills her and lectures Joe about the necessity of
loyalty to his fellow marines. Soon after that, Cord is tem****arily
killed in battle just before Joe steps on a mine and is hurled into a
river by the force of the explosion. When Joe comes back to
consciousness he sees the revived Cord swimming to his rescue. Joe
protests that Cord is dead. Cord tries to convince Joe that he's
delirious and in shock. When Joe refuses to accept this easy
explanation, Cord says "You're a pain in the ass, Boyscout."

In the present, Cord says to Joe that he looks good or at least better
than the last time he saw Joe. "No," says Joe. "I got old. You look
good." Cord pretends that the sniper only clipped him, but Joe tells
Cord that he knows he's Immortal. Joe asks Cord if he knows who the
sniper was. Cord says it could be anyone. "Got a lot of past," he
says. Then he adds that it must be the same for Joe's friend. He
must have sensed Duncan on the scene before he was shot. Joe reveals
that his Immortal friend is Duncan MacLeod and says he's the best of
friends. He also assures Cord that he knows how to keep a secret.
"Semper fi," says Cord and adds "You always were a Boyscout, Joe."
Joe laughs.
