Joe goes to Duncan's loft to tell Duncan about the im****tance of Cord
in his life. He carried Joe on his back for 16 miles to the nearest
field hospital. Duncan assures Joe that if Cord isn't looking for
him, he isn't looking for Cord.

Duncan contradicts that statement when he comes into Joe's looking for
Cord. He wants to arrange a meeting. Joe says that he doesn't know
if he can do that. Duncan says that Joe is the only one who can. He
assures Joe that he only wants to talk. He knows Cord saved Joe's
life. Joe says he did more than that.

Joe experiences another Vietnam flashback. Joe returns to
consciousness in the field hospital complaining about phantom pain
from legs he doesn't know are missing yet. The field hospital
psychaiatrist comes to talk to him. When Joe insists that Cord
brought him in, the doctor says that Cord's dog tags had been found.
He's been re****ted dead. The doctor tells Joe he's confused. Then
Joe asks for medication for the pain in his legs, and the doctor has
to give him the bad news. Joe starts crying and says "Jesus, no!"
After the doctor leaves him, Joe gets his gun out from under the
pillow and is about to kill himself when Ian Bancroft shows up. "Go
to hell," says Joe. Ian confirms for Joe that Cord is still alive.
Then he shows Joe his tattoo and tells him about the Watchers and
Immortality. He offers Joe a chance to join.

In the present Joe displays his tattoo to Duncan and says that if it
weren't for Cord he wouldn't have the tattoo and he wouldn't know
Duncan. "I might not even be alive," he adds soberly. Duncan says no
one knows more about him than Joe, but he didn't know anything about
Joe's past until now. Joe says that Duncan never asked and if Duncan
had, Joe might not have told him. "When you have a secret, you get
into the habit of not opening up." Duncan says he knows about that.
Joe responds "We gotta talk more often."

Duncan reveals that the sniper who attacked Cord was Charlie. Joe
wonders why Charlie would come after Cord. Duncan tells him about
Mara's death. He says that he wants to talk to Cord for Charlie's
sake.

Cord is at a weekend warrior camp where yuppies shoot paint at each
other. Joe can't understand why Cord thinks this is fun. "Knocking
off a bunch of yuppie rabbits? It doesn't seem fair." Cord points
out that the rabbits don't know he has the advantage. Joe has asked
Cord about meeting Duncan before the scene begins. He says he still
needs an answer. Cord asks how well Joe knows Duncan. Joe says he's
a friend. "You got a lot of friends, Joe," says Cord cynically.
"It's a regular Sesame Street." But Cord agrees to meet with Duncan
and "work something out".
