Questions For Further Study
1)Did Joe get Cord into his vehicle by himself or did he get help from
Cord's Watcher? Would Cord's Watcher have agreed that it's a good
idea for Cord to revive in Joe's company?
2)Why doesn't Joe resent Cord calling the CD of himself singing
"crap"? Does Joe think that Cord has complete license to insult him
because of what Cord did for him?
3)Joe sings "good marines they don't grow old" as a reminder to Cord,
but does he think there's a certain irony in that for him as a mortal
marine was has grown old? How does Joe feel about those song lyrics?
4)How does Joe feel about the nickname "Boyscout"? Does Joe perceive
himself as a boyscout? Is Joe aware that Amanda calls Duncan
"boyscout"? Is the perception that Duncan and Joe are boyscouts a
link between these characters?
5)Has Joe ever thought about Cord killing the Vietnamese woman who had
been raped over the years? Does it bother Joe in the present that the
rapist wasn't re****ted?
6) If Joe was truly suicidal after learning that he had no legs, why
did he grab on to the Watcher lifeline that Ian Bancroft threw him?
Wouldn't someone who was really suicidally depressed be unwilling to
consider other options?
7)Does Joe inwardly resent Cord saying that Joe lives in a "Sesame
Street" world?
8)Joe says to Duncan that after Vietnam he had some time on his
hands. Wouldn't rehab have taken a great deal of time and effort for
him?
9)When Joe says to Charlie that if he comes back later he'll tell
Charlie everything he wants to know, how much did Joe intend to tell
Charlie at that point? Was he going to tell Charlie about Immortality
and Watchers? What if Duncan and Cord had met on holy ground
somewhere and Joe had gotten a chance to have that talk with Charlie?
How would it have played?
10)Joe doesn't fully confide in Charlie about his experiences in
Vietnam when Joe tries to persuade Charlie not to fight Cord. If Joe
was going to make that last ditch effort, why would he hold back the
story of Cord rescuing him after he stepped on a mine?
11)Did Joe regret betraying Cord by telling Duncan about the weekend
warrior camp where Cord was staying?
12) In the final scene Joe is wearing a suit. The only other time
when we see Joe wearing a suit he's just come from a funeral. Did Joe
just come from burying Andrew Cord? What would Joe have put on Cord's
tombstone?
Some interesting questions here that I hadn't previously considered.
Next time I plan to post about Cord, but it might be a while. I have
a family crisis with my mother in the hospital, so my time for posting
here is more limited.
