Re whether I read Outlander-- Yes, I did read the bloody thing and
that's precisely why I'm picky.  Everyone recommends Gabaldon when you
say Scottish romance and I think her Scottish romances aren't very
good.  I used to say that she's also a terrible writer because she
extends a hundred pages worth of story to a thousand, but she's proven
that she can write well when she wants to do it.  Her Lord John
mysteries are  tightly plotted.  Lord John and the Brotherhood of the
Blade is actually wonderful.  It's on my mystery/thriller top ten for
the year.
