Immortal Andrew Cord is temporarily killed by a sniper at Seacouver
Airport. Joe happens to be on hand because he has either just
returned from Scotland or is picking Duncan up at the airport when
Duncan returns from the land of his birth. Duncan tells Joe to deal
with Cord, so he doesn't revive publicly. Then Duncan pursues the
sniper.
Cord revives in Joe's vehicle. He hears music which happens to be a
CD of Joe singing. "Turn that crap off," says Cord. Joe does as he's
told and addresses Cord as sergeant. Cord is puzzled because he
doesn't recognize Joe. So Joe starts singing " I don't know but I've
been told, good marines they don't grow old." Cord sees this as a
reference to his immortality and defensively says that he doesn't know
what Joe is talking about. So Joe mentions the village in Vietnam
where his life changed so completely. Cord then remembers Joe and
addresses him by the nickname he once used for Joe when he was Joe's
sergeant, "boyscout".
Joe experiences a Vietnam flashback. He enters a hut with Cord. A
Vietnamese woman inside the hut had been raped by another member of
Cord's platoon. Cord tries to buy her silence with a Rolex watch
which he says fell off a truck. She's unwilling to accept payment.
Cord says they had better come to an agreement and orders Joe to
leave. Moments later we hear a shot and it's clear that Cord has
killed her. "Jesus, Andy!" says Joe "What did you do?" Cord tells
Joe that the rapist would have been court martialed. "He's scum, but
he's our scum," says Cord. Joe protests that Americans are in Vietnam
to help the Vietnamese. Cord says that American soldiers are supposed
to stay alive and they do that by taking care of their own. Cord
points out that the Vietnamese don't want Americans in their country.
"We only got each other," Cord tells Joe.
Then Cord is temporarily killed in battle, and Joe steps on a mine and
goes flying into a river. Cord revives and swims to Joe's rescue.
Joe objects that Cord is supposed to be dead. Cord tries to convince
Joe that he's delirious and in shock. Then he says "You're a pain in
the ass, boyscout."
In the present, Cord says to Joe that he looks good or better than
when Cord saw him last. "No," says Joe. "I got old. You look
good." Cord says he looks good for someone who has just been
clipped. Joe says he knows that Cord died and revived, and that he's
Immortal. Cord says "That's a hell of an ice breaker." Joe then asks
if Cord knows who the shooter was. Cord says it could be anyone.
"Got a lot of past." He concludes that Joe's friend must have similar
problems. He must have sensed Duncan before he was shot. Joe tells
Cord what a good friend Duncan has been. Then he reassures Cord that
he can keep a secret. "Semper fi," says Cord. "You always were a
boyscout," Cord adds. Joe laughs.
