What's the point of being registered as an Independent if its main
significance is that you can't vote in the primaries?
Just asking, not making a value judgment.
My high school history teacher explained that it's best to *register*
with the most powerful party at the time, so you can vote in the
primaries to choose the least disgusting candidates *and* perhaps, as
a member of the party, have influence on their policies. I've always
been a Democrat, but never had the stomach to register as a Republican
during their all-powerful years (1994-2006) ... so I never followed
the teacher's advice. I always just thought it made sense. You can
*always* change your registration. Politicians around here do it
rather more frequently than a person might expect.
