On one of my mailing lists (which is about fantasy fiction), people
have been raving about it for years.  At least one such person is in
his 50s.  Now that a movie is out based on the first book, I figure I
need to hurry up and read at least that one before I see the movie.
Which I've done.

The first book is written on multiple levels.  It's got overtones,
hints, and dark elements that are pretty squarely intended for adults.
I know of parents who are not letting their kids read it, for one
reason or another -- either because it ****trays religious hierarchies
in a negative way, or because it's too dark.  Definitely not "just"
juvenile fiction.  Also, much more tightly written than, say, Harry
Potter.  Reminds me of Lloyd Alexander's Prydain, but darker.
