Highlander Character Seminar: Richie Ryan in The Innocent

by Shomeret <JDChronicler@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jan 20, 2008 at 04:06 PM

Post 1

Richie encounters Mikey while driving down the road on his
motorcycle. He gives Mikey some food. When he confirms that Mikey
has no place to go, he asks Mikey if he wants to come along with him.
Mikey agrees and hopes on the back of the motorcycle.

Richie decides to bring Mikey to Duncan. Duncan had just purchased a
house that's a fixer upper. When Richie sees the photo and the price,
he calls it "an expensive wreck".

When Richie introduces Duncan and Mikey to each other, he calls Duncan
his best friend. Duncan asks Richie where he found Mikey. Richie
says that it was just south of Grantville wandering in the middle of
nowhere.

After Duncan has a problem with Mikey examining an antique clock,
Richie suggests that they all take a walk. Richie tells Duncan that
he couldn't leave Mikey where he was. "When you find somebody
helpless, you gotta protect them, right?"

In the park Duncan fixes Mikey's model locomotive. "Look at how happy
you made him," says Richie. When Duncan says that Mikey must have had
a caretaker, Richie wonders if it was an Immortal. "We may never
know," Duncan responds.

After Mikey knocks empty water containers off a truck Richie assures
the driver he and Duncan will put them back. Not too long afterward,
they retrieve Mikey from the front seat of an tourist amusement train
on a circular track. "You could have broken it!" the driver shouts at
Mikey. "But he didn't," Richie points out and leads Mikey away. Then
when they arrive at the dojo, Richie has to assure Mikey that a
fencing match between mortals is just a game.

Back in the loft, Richie confesses that he doesn't know what to do
with Mikey, but he thinks that it's fate that he found Mikey and he's
meant to take care of him. Duncan points out that it would be a 24
hour a day commitment. Richie would have to dedicate his life to
Mikey. Richie decides to talk to some social workers. He tells Mikey
to help Duncan.

While Richie is gone, Mikey is arrested because he attacked the police
officers who were checking on him after they ran him over. When
Duncan tells Richie what happened, he's outraged. Duncan finds the
arrest understandable under the circumstances. Richie wants Mikey to
have a good life. They have to figure out a way, he tells Duncan. He
wonders if the kind of life you have is just random chance or if it's
destined. Duncan says he thinks there's a plan, but he doesn't know
what it is. Richie wonders about Mikey's age and speculates that he's
aware of being Immortal. Duncan says that Mikey might be aware, but
it doesn't change anything. Richie says that they can at least get
him out of jail. "And then what?'" Duncan demands. "I don't know,"
says Richie, "but I'm working on it."
