In his first scene Duncan is on the phone attempting to find out
whether his offer on a fixer upper house had been accepted.
Apparently it had been because he just says "send me the papers" and
hangs up.
When Richie arrives with Mikey, Duncan asks Richie's opinion of a
photo of the house. Richie calls it "an expensive wreck".
Duncan introduces himself to Mikey and Mikey tells him about Duncan,
Oklahoma as a train destination. Duncan says "I'm very glad to know
that." Richie then tells Mikey that Duncan is his best friend.
Duncan is concerned when Mikey picks up an antique clock and tells
him to be careful with it. Mikey immediately gives it to Duncan and
says he's sorry. At that point, Richie suggests that they all go for
a walk. Before they leave, Richie says to Duncan that he couldn't
just leave Mikey. "When you find somebody helpless you gotta protect
him, right?"
Duncan experiences a flashback to a situation when he tried to protect
someone helpless and the consequences weren't good ones. Duncan
witnesses a white man whipping his Indian slave. Duncan dismounts
from his horse seeking to intervene. The slaveowner objects that
where he comes from "no one comes between a man and his property."
Duncan responds "guess we come from different places." The slaveowner
tries to whip Duncan, but Duncan gets the whip away from him and then
whips the slaveowner. The slaveowner swears vengeance and rides
away. "He will not forget this," says the Indian. "I hope not," says
Duncan. The Indian says his name is Chaske. Duncan wants to take
Chaske to a doctor. Chaske realizes that this will be a disaster for
him, so he says he'll be fine. But he isn't able to walk two steps
without falling. "Sure you will," says Duncan picking him up.
In the present Duncan fixes Mikey's toy locomotive. When Mikey only
says "Nobody's home" in response to Duncan's inquiries about where he
used to live, Duncan says to Richie that someone must have been taking
care of him. "You think it was an Immortal?" Richie wonders. "We may
never know," Duncan answers.
When Mikey knocks empty water containers off a truck, Duncan helps
Richie put them back.
Back in the loft, Duncan warns Richie that taking care of Mikey would
be a 24 hour a day commitment. Richie decides to talk to some social
workers about a placement for Mikey. He tells Mikey to help Duncan
while he's gone. Soon after Richie leaves, they feel a buzz. Duncan
tells Mikey to stay put and he'll take care of it.
