The Immortal in the dojo turns out to be the K'Immie who killed Alan,
Mikey's previous caretaker. He introduces himself as Tyler King and
asks Duncan to hand Mikey over. "He's lunchmeat. He's barely a blip
on the EEG," says King. "He thinks, he feels. He's got as much right
to life as you do," Duncan admonishes him. "He's going to get whacked
soon enough. So why not by me?" King demands. "Because I say so,"
Duncan tells him. Duncan and King fight. Mikey tries to interfere.
Duncan tells Mikey to get out of there. Mikey runs out of the dojo
into the street. Duncan pursues him leaving his opponent on the
floor.
When Duncan finds Mikey he's being taken away by police in handcuffs.
Duncan experiences another flashback. He comes into town with
Chaske. Chaske is intimidated by the glares of hostility directed at
him. Duncan assures him that they'll leave as soon as he's patched
up. Then the town doctor says that he can't bring an Indian into his
office. "You took an oath, didn't you?" Duncan reminds him. The
doctor says that treating an Indian is asking for trouble. "Half the
town lost friends or relatives to the Cheyenne." Chaske says "I'm
sorry to hear that, but I'm not Cheyenne." The doctor decides to
treat Chaske while Duncan stands guard outside.
In the present Duncan watches the cops drive away with Mikey. Duncan
apparently found out that cops arrested Mikey for assaulting them and
tells Richie about it. Duncan thinks the arrest is understandable
under the circumstances. He tells Richie that they can't change
Mikey's destiny. Richie wonders if everything is really destined.
Duncan says that he thinks there's some sort of cosmic plan, but he
doesn't know what it is. Richie then wonders about Mikey's age and
whether Mikey knows he's Immortal. Duncan says that he doesn't think
Mikey knows how old he is and if Mikey's aware that he's Immortal, it
doesn't make any difference. Richie says he just wants to get Mikey
out of jail. "And then what?" Duncan demands. Richie says that he's
working on it.
Duncan experiences a flashback while they're getting Mikey out of
jail.
The crowd outside the doctor's office starts to look like a lynch
mob. Duncan asks the main agitator whether his problem with Chaske
is his hair or his clothes. "Are you making fun of me, mister?" asks
the anti-Indian agitator. "Someone should," says Duncan. The sheriff
arrives and while he's inquiring about the situation, Chaske sneaks
out the rear door. Unfortunately, he encounters his former master,
takes his gun away and shoots him. The sheriff tells Chaske to drop
the gun. Duncan tells Chaske to do as the sheriff says. Duncan
explains that the man Chaske shot would have whipped him to death if
Duncan hadn't intervened. The sheriff speaks about Chaske telling his
side of the story at his trial. Chaske doesn't believe he can get a
fair trial, so he runs. The anti-Indian agitator shoots and kills
Chaske saying that he's a murderer trying to escape. Duncan slugs
him.
