Oh you can quite easily watch the show and never know it is in any
way linked to Doctor Who but you miss alot of background and
subtleties.  Capt. Jack, the leader of Torchwood, is introduced in
the new Who and plays a significant role in it.  Much about his
character can't truly be understood without seeing how he got there.
His immortality being a key point that is illuminated in the Who
series and of course the hand in a bottle that he is so disturbingly
invested in means nothing without viewing Doctor Who.  Not to mention
that the Doctor's current companion Martha Jones will be in the new
series of Torchwood this season for a few eps.

Regardless of behind the scenes the end product was quite good IMO and
far more interesting and enjoyable than I would have expected it to be,
much like the new Galactica.  I guess it just didn't catch an audience?
Yet pretentious crap like "Pu****ng Daisies" still manages to hold on
somehow?
