I don't know if a water pistol would work but I'm not going to spend my
days 
(and nights) hanging out at my window waiting for the squirrels to come 
calling.... I bought a new thicker hopefully better screen and now I'm 
waking up several times in the middle of the night to check it for holes.
So 
far so good, except for the exhaustion....I never heard about the pepper 
thing but after reading Jette's suggestion I went searching and found a 
recipe for a squirrel repellent that uses hot pepper sauce, water and 
dishwa****ng detergent, I'm going to try this and spray it over the window 
sill and screen. They also suggest rags soaked in ammonia or socks filled 
with mothballs.

About Morty's suggestion...it's been so many years since I've seen 
Caddyshack, I remember the gophers but not the squirrels. Are we talking 
about massive amounts of explosive?
