We were on opposite sides politically, and probably every other which
way. He spoke at the University of Iowa when I was a student there in
the early 70s, and he held the entire audience spellbound with his
eloquence, his intelligence, and his humor. He probably thought we
were a bunch of hick ragamuffins, but it didn't matter to *me*, and
I've always held him in high regard. RIP William F. Buckley, Jr. Not
many like him. Now he's gone and it is a real loss to civilized
discourse.
