This new program so obviously inspired by Highlander, is a far better piece
of fiction than given credit by those enamored of the Highlander mythos.
It is a story of an ordinary man who must deal with life day to day over
time. It is through fascinating flashbacks that we see how he has coped,
how
he has kept his sanity and his humanity. There are hints of flaws, faults,
and ordinary humanity.
Some have criticized this program as silly. No more so than a world
peopled
by those from who knows where cast upon the earth and mandated to hunt
eachother down, behead them, and then endure lightning strikes and
shattering glass for no apparent reason.
New Amsterdam is proving to be an excellent police drama. The major
weakness, as pointed out by others, is The One, the soulmate who when
found,
wooed, and won, will apparently bring mortality and ultimately death and
peace, a pretty mundane Prize of no particular value.
John Amsterdam is a man, no doubt about it. He has been a surgeon, an
attorney, a police detective, a soldier, a photographer, a furniture maker
and more. His life and history should cause each of us to ask if we too
are
living our lives to the full potential. After all, each of us has all the
time there is. So what do we do with it? If given immortality what would
we
achieve? Or squander?
Only time will tell if this new series has legs. So far so good. IMHO
