There is no way a church could move St. Patrick's Day in Kansas City.
The parade is a big family affair with every family who even wants to
claim some Irish background draping a green sheet over a convertible
and proclaiming themselves Irish for the day. It started years ago
with the Mayor of Westport, a radio deejay, and a 3-legged dog taking
a stroll to a nearby bar and calling it a parade. It grew, of course.
Now it's a big commercial affair, interspersed with lots of "Irish"
families ... and marching/dancing drum corps. You ain't seen nothin'
till you've seen the Marching Cobras and the Marching Every Other Kind
o' Snake With a Drum corps. None of this has anything to do with any
church. St. Patrick shows up on the occasional float, but is way
outdistanced by leprechauns. And the taxis will give you a free ride
home after you get drunk on green beer.
The Catholic church has enough on its hands, trying to keep the
faithful away from that display of dead people at Union Station ...
skinned dead people who've been plasticized ... well, I haven't seen
it in person ... but those people who liked it really liked it ... I
have merely firmed my resolve to be cremated. Like I want my pale, fat
body to be skinned, plasticized, and placed in an active position for
ghouls to look at for $9 a person ... or whatever.
