The episode opens in Macao. Immortal Kit O'Brady is playing mahjong
with three Chinese men. He erroneously claims that an American
invented mahjong. He kisses his cane before he takes his turn. He
wins with "dragon woo". The total of his winnings is $65 K, but he
owes a gangster $150 K in addition. The gangster shoots Kit when he
resists paying up. Some Chinese cover up Kit's corpse, so that the
gangster can't find him. Then one of them tries to take Kit's money
once the gangster is gone. But Kit revives and takes the money from
him saying "Sometimes they stay dead and sometimes they don't."
We next see Kit visiting Duncan at his fixer upper house. He
announces his presence with a sneeze which is Kit's reaction to
sensing an Immortal. Kit doesn't want Duncan to touch his expensive
clothes with his dirty hands. He also says that Duncan can hire
people to do the work he's doing on the house. Kit boasts of his
callus free hands.
We see a flashback to San Francisco in 1888. Kit beats and ejects a
cheater from his casino, the Double Eagle. Duncan asks if Kit can
make good on Duncan's losses to the cheater. Duncan claims it was
$2000, but Kit doesn't believe him.
Kit and Duncan feel a buzz. Amanda walks in. "Now that I call
style," says Kit. "She knows how to make an entrance." Duncan
introduces them to each other saying that Kit is the owner of the
Double Eagle. Amanda is pretending to be French and mispronounces
"magnifique" in her description of the casino, but Kit is unsuspicious
and thanks her. She asks if the double eagle is Kit's family crest.
Kit points out the coin mounted on the wall behind the bar. He says
he named the casino after that coin which was the only one in his
pocket when he arrived in San Francisco.
When Amanda asks to join the poker game that Kit and Duncan are about
to play with a high rolling count, Kit is delighted--especially when
she claims to have only played " a little whist".
In the present Duncan invites Kit for lunch, but Kit pleads an
important appointment and wants to do dinner instead. Kit also wants
to eat Chinese, but Duncan says he ate Chinese yesterday. Kit
suggests they flip for it, but Duncan doesn't like that idea. Kit
says "no guts, no glory" and flips the coin, but Duncan wins. Kit
says he has had a run of bad luck. Duncan suggests that Kit stop
gambling. Kit says he's come 8000 miles for a sure thing--the perfect
horse. Then Kit leaves to see about the horse.
Later Kit comes to the dojo and Duncan comes down to meet him. Kit is
critical of the dojo as a place to live. Duncan tells him that he
actually lives upstairs. When Kit appears to want to see the loft for
himself, Duncan tells him it's very messy. So Kit says they can go
out. Duncan says that tomorrow is better. Kit realizes that Duncan
has a woman upstairs. Kit wants to meet her. Duncan says she's shy.
Kit recalls that the last woman he saw with Duncan was "that
thieving" Amanda. "I'm surprised you remember her," says Duncan.
"There isn't a day that goes by when I don't think about Amanda,"
declares Kit.
Back in the flashback, Duncan and the Count have folded leaving only
Kit and Amanda in the poker game. Kit raises Amanda $10 K. Amanda
pretends she doesn't know what to do. She doesn't have $10 K worth of
chips. She tries to say that her earrings are worth $15 K and that
a prince gave them to her. Kit calls the prince "a piker" and says
that the earrings are only worth $5 K at best. The Count says that if
Amanda takes off her dress, he'll stake her the rest of the money.
Amanda refuses. Then she removes her necklace and says that it's
worth $40 K. Kit accepts that valuation and throws in a note
representing the deed to the Double Eagle. Duncan protests that this
is going too far, but Kit says "I live for games like this." He adds
that this is the best game since his arrival in San Francisco. Kit's
hand is a full house. Amanda's hand is a royal flush. She rips the
note representing the deed to the casino from Kit's hand and
immediately declares herself the new owner.
