Post 2
In the present Kit repeats that not a day goes by when he doesn't
think of Amanda...dead. He breaks a martial arts staff for emphasis.
Then he apologizes for breaking it and leaves.
At the race track Kit watches the horse he wants running. We learn
that the horse is called Double Eagle. The owner says he has an offer
of $120 K for her. Kit had expected to pay only $65 K. The owner
says that if he can match the $120 K offer, he can have the horse. So
Kit calls Duncan.
As Duncan watches Double Eagle run, he says that no one buys a horse
based on a name. Kit says he knows Duncan is a great judge of horses,
so he wants Duncan's opinion. He asks Duncan to take a closer look.
Duncan has good things to say about the horse when he examines her in
the stall. Kit says if he can get this horse, he can break his losing
streak that had been started when Amanda took his casino from him.
Duncan says Kit can't blame Amanda for everything. Kit says that
right after he lost the Double Eagle to Amanda, he won a trip to
Alaska on a steamer that sank with all hands. Duncan argues that if
Kit got to know Amanda he might like her.
In the flashback, Kit returns to the casino with what he believes are
enough funds to buy it back. Amanda tells him he's welcome to gamble,
but the casino isn't for sale. Kit tells her he built it from
nothing, and it's his life. Amanda says that now it's her life. Kit
says "No thieving French harlot with a coiffure" is going to take it
away from him. Amanda slaps him and says she's not French. "Yeah but
you cheated," says Kit. He claims that he doesn't lose games in his
casino named for his lucky coin. Amanda responds that she changed the
name to the Queen of Spades. Kit asks the bartender for his lucky
coin back, but Amanda refuses to allow it. She says that she won the
casino "lock, stock and barrel" and that includes the coin. Amanda
throws Kit out. Kit barely manages to avoid bursting into tears.
In the present Kit tries to convince Duncan to help him buy the
horse. He asks Duncan if the filly is worth it. Duncan asks how much
the owner wants. When Kit reveals that it's $120 K, Duncan says
that's about right. Duncan feels a buzz and Kit sneezes. Duncan says
it's his friend Richie, and he needs to go meet him. When Kit later
encounters Duncan with Richie, Duncan says that Richie manages his
finances and leaves Richie with Kit because Amanda has arrived.
Richie arranges the horse deal. While Amanda is in the stall with the
horse, Duncan convinces Kit that they need to go out and celebrate
with champagne and caviar. They flip for who will pay. Duncan throws
the coin, and conceals the fact that Kit lost, so that Kit will think
that his luck has turned.
Unfortunately, Kit later comes up in the elevator while Amanda is
there. They hurl accusations at each other and Amanda reveals that
she threw Kit's lucky coin into the sewer. "Some rat's got it, and
he's probably winning," Amanda says sneeringly. Kit tells Duncan that
he better get a new woman because this one's gone. Duncan asks if
they can't discuss this like reasonable people. Kit and Amanda both
shout "No!". They face off in the dojo while Duncan pleads that he
doesn't want to watch them kill each other in his home. Kit suggests
that Duncan avert his eyes. Duncan points out that they're partners.
He gave his half of the horse to Amanda. They decide to fight after
the race the next day. The survivor keeps the horse.
The next day just before the race, Amanda declares that after she
takes Kit's head, she'll change the horse's name to Queen of Spades.
"How original!" Kit comments sarcastically. They root for the horse
together and embrace when the horse wins.
Yet despite this result, Kit and Amanda decide to fight. Duncan
arrives with a copy of a newspaper article that proves that Kit was in
the ocean tem****arily dead after having been aboard a steamer that
sank when the casino burned down. He couldn't have set the casino on
fire as Amanda believed. Amanda admits that she was wrong. Kit says
that Amanda owes him a great deal more than an apology. They face off
again. Then they realize that they won, and suddenly don't want to
fight. But they can't agree on issues involving the horse such as the
horse's trainer or the jockey. Duncan suggests that they gamble for
owner****p of the horse. He brings out a deck of cards and says "High
card takes it." After the draw, Amanda tells Kit that the horse is
his even though she really won. Kit leaves planning to enter Double
Eagle in the Kentucky Derby.
End lecture. Questions in the next post.
