I'm feeling the confusion of my ignorance here. But I think maybe
perhaps the girl he confessed his immortality to is not his soul mate.
He met his soul mate and it knocked him out in public. Which is how he
met the girl he confessed his immortality to ... and he started
investigating who is the girl who is supposedly his soul mate.
Because, as everyone knows, the fondest wish of your angsty immortal
is to die. Even if he's living the life o' Ryan in the meantime.
