Sorry I'm joining the conversation late.
I've had a lot of good luck unloading things that I thought were
landfill-bound using Freecycle. http://www.freecycle.org/
to find a
group near you and join its Yahoo list. Then send the group an email
listing the things you have that you want to give away, and see if
anyone wants them. You can either arrange a time for the recipient to
come and get them (I put the stuff out on the porch at the proper
time) or arrange to meet in a public place if you're antsy about them
coming by the house.
