Back in the 70s "green apple" scented shampoo was all the rage.  I 
used it - like everyone else - but noticed that I kept getting an 
itchy scalp, but I didn't have dandruff - then I read the ingredients 
on the shampoo, and saw "formaldehyde" listed.

Now I remembered that in Biology class we'd used diluted formaldehyde 
to cause worms to come to the surface of the ground so we could count 
them.  It irritated the skin of the worms, so they surfaced to try to 
get rid of the irritation.  So I stopped using the shampoo and the 
itch went away - now I check all shampoos for suspicious ingredients.
