Highlander Character Seminar: Terence Kincaid in Reunion

by Shomeret <JDChronicler@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > May 4, 2008 at 09:31 PM

In the opening scene Kincaid is chasing Kenny. Kincaid probably
wounded Kenny because his arm is covered with blood. He pursues Kenny
into a hospital. When Dr. Anne asks Kenny if he knows Kincaid, Kenny
says he's never seen him before.

Anne sends for Duncan who encounters Kincaid in the corridor and has a
flashback to the last time he dealt with Kincaid.

Duncan and the crew of Kincaid's ship are on an island. When the
water they find turns out to be unfit to drink, Kincaid says to a
complaining crew member, "Patience is a virtue, Mr. Merriman."
Merrimen also protests that they can't live on half-rations. "You
will because I order it," says Kincaid. When Merriman tries to get
support for going back to China for supplies, Kincaid draws his gun.
Duncan tries to persuade Kincaid that Merriman won't make any more
trouble, but Kincaid tells Duncan to step aside and kills Merriman.
"We have a cargo to deliver and I won't hear any more talk of turning
back," says Kincaid. He orders Duncan to just leave Merriman's body
without burial. Duncan questions Kincaid about the necessity of
killing Merriman. Kincaid says he couldn't allow talk about turning
back because the cargo has to be in London by the end of August or he
defaults which would cost him 100,000 pounds sterling. He didn't
intend to lose that much money "for the sake of a few lives.' The
crew mutinies. Duncan convinces them to maroon Kincaid instead of
killing him. Kincaid asks how Duncan could do this to him when they
are "of the same kind". Duncan says "This is your doing, Kincaid, not
mine." As Duncan and the crew leave him behind, Kincaid shouts that
there's no food or water on the island.

In the present Duncan goes to find Kincaid at the docks. "Well, if it
isn't the White Knight," says Kincaid sarcastically. He asks why
Duncan is too noble to take Kenny's head, but was willing to support a
mutiny. "I gave you your life," Duncan responds. Kincaid describes
his experience of dying of starvation over and over in detail. Duncan
says that Kincaid gave him no choice. "You should have killed me on
that island," Kincaid shouts and draws his sword. They fight. Some
mortal dock loaders approach, so they are forced to break off. Duncan
tells Kincaid to stay away from him and he'll stay alive.

After Duncan leaves, Kenny appears and tells Kincaid that he can help
Kincaid get rid of Duncan.

Kenny lures Amanda to the docks with a phone call in which he claims
to need rescue from Kincaid. Kenny knows Duncan will follow Amanda,
and tells that Kincaid when Kincaid objects that he has no interest in
Amanda.

Duncan does show up to fight Kincaid. Kenny interferes by releasing a
gas that blinds Duncan, but Duncan still manages to take Kincaid's
head.

                 Questions For Further Study

1)Do you think Kincaid was pursuing Kenny just because he's an easy
target, or did Kenny wrong Kincaid in some way? Kenny tells Anne that
he's never met Kincaid before, but he could be lying.

2)In the flashback, do you think Kincaid put himself on half rations
along with his crew?

3)Merriman's corpse was left on the island. Do you think Kincaid
engaged in cannibalism after he was marooned?
Kincaid didn't mention that to Duncan in his speech about what he
endured on the island. Do you think he would have been too ashamed to
mention such a thing?

4)In the present, do you think Kincaid had given his approval in
advance to Kenny releasing the gas, or was Kenny operating on his own
when he did that?

Kincaid certainly isn't an appealing character.

Next time I'll be posting about Anne in this episode.
