Catherine Tate is a moderately famous "comedy actress/comedienne" here
in the UK. Her most famous character in her comedy sketch show is an
obnoxious teen girl called "Lauren" - the sort of teen girl that every
teacher has nightmares about teaching. Her catchphrase is "Am I
bothered?" (and variations thereof) Her show is extremely popular -
but generally not with the same demographic that watches Doctor Who.

She's VERY talented - although I'm not particularly fond of her
comedy stylings, I can admire the technical ability without enjoying
most of the result. (though the Red Nose Day special scene with David
Tennant as an English teacher - with Scottish accent - taking Lauren's
class is brilliant). Like many great comedy actors she has the timing
for great drama too - but this is really the first time most people
have seen her in a dramatic role, rather than a comedy sketch.

Actually I LIKE her DW character Donna Noble. She's exactly the kind
of character the Doctor needs as a companion at the moment - a
refre****ng change from the "ooh, help me, help me SCREAM!" companions
of yesteryear and the mooning love struck girlies they've landed him
with recently. A mature woman who treats him as an equal in many ways
and gives him a slap when he deserves it. That said, she's not that
popular with most of DW fandom - though at least fandom *is* divided
over her (some of us love her, some hate her), unlike the other
red-headed companion played by Bonnie Langford some years back (Mel?),
who was hated by ALL.
