Let me see if I can clear this up.
She was born Padme Naberrie. Upon becoming Queen, she took the moniker
HRH
Queen Amidala of Naboo as her official title and regnal name. At the
insistence of Captain Pa****a, a decoy, in the person of one of her
handmaidens (named Sabe - and played by Keira Knightly) posed as the queen
during potentially dangerous situations, while the real queen, disguised
as
handmaiden Padme, could move about in relative safety, and still be close
enough to guide her look-a-like.
Amidala always appeared as the queen during official functions.
She likely set up the whole "clean up the droid" thing in order to be able
to speak with and interact more informally with Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Jar
Jar, and also to help set her up as her envoy when they all went into Mos
Espa.
Upon ending her tenure as Queen, and becoming a Senator, she took the name
Padme Amidala.
That help at all?
