My first adventure was putting together a bookcase. This was an
adventure because I'd never done it before and I didn't understand
either the instructions or what the little doohickies were in the bag
provided. My roommate persuaded me to buy a bookcase that needed
assembly from Ikea. Fortunately she helped me every step of the way.
I actually gave up before I started because I thought the drawings
(there were no written instructions) indicated that I needed a drill
and that's much too terrifying for me. But it turned out that the
instructions were really showing a type of screwdriver that was
actually in the bag. I did eventually put it all together, but I
never did find out what everything was called.
My next adventure was a visit to a farm. I gathered fresh peas there
and ate them. I also took some home. Shelley, one of the farm's
owners, also gave me a half dozen farm fresh eggs from their chickens,
which I took home with me. But I had a misadventure. Beavers had
dammed the irrigation canal and there was enough water in it to go
boating in a canoe. So Chris, one of the owners of the farm, paddled
me and my friend Catherine down the irrigation canal. There was a
waterfall and the canoe took in quite a bit of water. This was at the
outset so I spent the entire trip soaked. There were tall reeds, logs
and other debris blocking the canal, so Chris had to periodically
unblock the way. It reminded me of scenes in books in which someone
is navigating through the bayous in Lousiana to visit the old conjure
woman who lives in the swamp.
After returning from the canoe trip I washed my shoes which were
filthy and set them out in the sun to dry. When I put them on after
dinner (we had a ****k roast, fresh farm veggies and chocolate cheese
cake for dessert). I discovered that they had shrunk. It didn't
bother my feet very much at the time. Now it's four days later and
I'm crippled from wearing those shrunken shoes. I'm taking the day to
rest my feet and ice them. They hurt too much to volunteer at the
library as I usually do on Fridays.
Tomorrow I will go to Shoe Pavilion. I will also go to the nearby
comic book store and buy Zorro #3. They're published by Dynamite, the
same company that published the HL comic, but I'm so much more
impressed with Zorro. I love the art and the approach. They're using
all the best aspects of the Zorro legend. I'm a huge fan of the Zorro
title.
