Here's another piece of sloppy research: on this CBS show Sunday they
did a flashback to the 1920s, and in one scene the shot clearly
identifies an Edison phonograph record -- then it gets played on a
conventional lateral-cut record player! Edison records are cut
up-and-down: they won't play on other machines! and never with steel
needles.
Nowadays a stereo record player should work with it because it receives
both kinds of groove modulation, but not the one they showed. Just
sloppy.
