I have no idea where I originally read he was "27" when he started as 
Spike in season 2, but I do remember being surprised when it was 
revealed on the groups that he was (and this was several years later) 
actually over 40 since back then he really did look quite a bit younger 
than his chronological age.  I guess everything I read about him was 
publicist approved up-to-that-point since it never even occurred to me 
to think he was substantially older than what the official Buffy stuff 
claimed.

These days (when he was on Smallville anyway) I don't think he looks all 
that different, except in close-ups when he's looking quite mummified. 
All in all, I think ASH is aging more gracefully, but that could be my 
own bias since I always loved Giles and was pretty much done with Spike 
after Tabula Rasa.  It just about killed me when he became a regular on 
Angel.
