OT: John From Cincinnati - WTF is going on?

I've been watching John from Cincinnati since the beginning and was
encouraged by the first couple of episodes.  Now I'm just scratching
my balls going "What the fuck is going on here?"  I love all the
Deadwood actors that Milch brought in, but this thing is fucking work
to figure out.  And so far, I've got nothing.

Anyone?  Anyone?  Bueller?  Ferris Bueller?
