Yes, I was surprised at how easily Voldemort took him out. I expected
Snape to be much more proactive than that. I figured he would've
anticipated some sort of treachery on Voldemort's part and plan
accordingly.

However, I agree with you, she didn't have to go there this time.
She's already driven this point home by showing us the impact on both
Harry and Neville.
Rowling says that she did not initially plan to kill Lupin and Tonks.
I wish she had stuck with this part of her original plan. I really
love the idea of this couple. I've stated elsewhere that I'm not
happy with how their relationship played out in Book 7. I don't think
that Lupin would've rushed into this marriage - certainly not before
Bill and Fleur's wedding (who were engaged for a longer period of
time). Lupin is a pretty cautious character, generally speaking. And
the fact that everything regarding their marriage took place offscreen
just felt like character and plot manipulation rather than an organic
process regarding these two characters.
But I guess Rowling got what she wanted - yet another boy wizard who
winds up an orphan, with just one godfather (and no godmother, grrr!),
and who's middle name is the same as his father's.

Agreed (although a certain part of me did enjoy hearing Molly Weasley
call Bellatrix a bitch). Also, if I'd had my druthers, Lupin would've
gotten a chance to face down the one who turned him into a werewolf,
Fenrir Greyback. I would've thought that would've been a natural
battle match-up.

Oh, yes, I loved that, too.
