Trickster is really a can of worms -- I did papers on trickster (small
t, don't ask) in Native American Literature a few months back and I had
to confess I wasn't entirely clear on a lot of it.
I said Kellerman was Loki/Loge because he was an outsider, viewed warily
by others because he was of that suspect world of the corrupt firemen,
at least in his own mind, as Loki was half god and half mortal. The
irony of Trickster is that he's a conduit between realities: Loki could
see other gods as flawed and virtually human. The damaged psyche made
him wise as well as cynical.
Mikey probably started honest -- we only have his word for it -- but
when he shot Luther Mahoney he drew others into a web of deceit, not
unlike the secrecy in the bribery scandal in the department he'd left
behind. The "fire" he represents is the threatened destruction of those
around him, as in various tellings of the Ring legend (versions vary).
Fortunately the series dumps that story line after Diamond leaves
series.
Also -- a little change of subject, but related -- consider the "Satan"
archetype accessed in Mikey's first episode: the villain, if you will,
appearing through a veil of smoke. Mikey doesn't necessarily know he's
the bad guy, of course.
Still pretty sure Kellerman/Diamond is a redhead. And look at those two
humps who played his brothers!
