CBS didn't want Bill in the spot as Fred Mertz because of his heavy
drinking, but he became quite a dependable actor on the show in his
own right. Vivian Vance never liked William Frawley (I'm wondering if
Lucille Ball felt the same way even though she paid a tearful farewell
to him in the Hollywood Re****ter when he died) because he was too old
to be playing her husband.
