I just finished watching JAGs first season and have the following
thoughts:
The stories, even though they were often preposterous, were amazingly
well done with production values. Especially the pilot, looked
terrific, like feature film stuff.
The original female lead, well I could see why the network dropped her.
She wasn't drop dead gorgeous, and more importantly she didn't set the
house on fire in a not especially demanding role.
So we get Needham replacing her, a "cute" star and arguably a better
actor. But I think the staff resented her, and put her in roles where
she got punched, thrown around, put in mud, shot in the head, etc. Then
we get the second blonde superior officer as competition for Harm. Then
we get the original actress back for a supporting role, and Harm saying
"I miss you." I don't feel like Needham was missed when she left after
the first season.
Someone should do a cost analysis of how much Harm saved the
government, esp. in the first season. He saves a battleship from coming
into enemy hands. He prevents a nuclear warhead from going off. He
saves another ship from sinking. So far I'm totalling millions, maybe
even billions of dollars saved. This guy is definitely underpaid!
