As much as I enjoy Joan Of Arcadia, and admire the novel concept,
something has always bugged me about the show, and tonight I finally
figured out what it is. Tell me, does anyone else share this feeling:
The show plays Joan as a total mediocrity, a sub-average student who
would have no sense of mission or purpose in life if God had not come
along to give her missions. I have no problem with that as a concept,
but I don't fully by into Amber Tamblyn in that role. And it's not
that I'm particularly a giant fan of Tamblyn -- I'd never heard of her
or seen or before JOA -- but although she's very capable actress, she
comes across as too smart, in spite of her acting and the writing.
I think almost all actors tend to carry a part of themselves into
their roles -- it's a rare actor who can truly, fully, convincingly
****tray a character that does not embody something about the actor's
personal style or character. In Amber Tamblyn's case, I just sense
this smart, focussed person beneath the plodding, "I'm nobody at all"
Joan character that she's playing.
Anyone else have the same problem with the show?
Totally separate issue: I can't stand Lucy and the Lucy plot.
Totally bizarre, doesn't fit the series.
