The term "avatar" - similar to what Nat and Al Enquirer/you said ("...an
image that represents a person in a virtual reality environment..."), like
a picture used on someone's posts in a message board - is used on the
Television Without Pity's JoA boards to describe the image of a person
that God's using to appear in person to Joan (or anyone else that sees
him/her).
Barbara Hall lurks on those boards, so I think it was a shout-out to
there, as a little joke.
Or it's just what they call 'em at the show, but I think shout-out.
