I think if God spoke to me from a Burning Bush, I'd probably fall in
line pretty quickly. But if God was showing up looking like my
annoying ex-girlfriend or my beer-buddy, I'd be inclined to engage in
a bit of give and take too.

In the JOA storyline -- and for whatever reason -- God is showing up
as people who seem like just plain folks. Whether it's the telephone
lineman, or the janitor, or even the cute boy, these are exactly the
kind of people to whom you'd want to say, "Exactly why are you
bothering me this time?" And in many ways, I think it's part of what
actually makes the show compelling (even for you "disappointed in the
second season" grumpies), because really, I think that is how many
people relate to God.

Think about it. Even for people of faith, since they can't actually
see God or hear God's voice, don't many of them engage in an ongoing
dialog, saying to themselves, "Today, am I going to be a good
Christian/Jew/Muslim, or today am I going to take a day off and party
instead?" Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that is precisely how
a lot of people relate to God. and JOA simply makes that tangible
through these offbeat Gods-in-the-flesh.
